So it looks like there's a new iPhone in the works - or so the rumor mill is spreading (though it's probably true). The rumor got started by a software developer who was reviewing the analytics data compiled from his public transportation iPhone app (iBart for San Franciscans) noticed an iPhone identifying itself as an iPhone 3.1.

3.1? But that doesn't exist! Or does it?

The 3 in 3.1 implies that the new device comes with major changes (hopefully improvements) because if Apple is only making minor changes to its iPhone OS then it goes up a decimal point, as in iPhone 2.1 (otherwise known as the iPhone 3GS).

What iPhone 3.1 will probably not be is the long-awaited Verizon iPhone. The rumors on that are saying there isn't likely to be a Verizon iPhone in all of 2010. Oh well. It certainly does pique the curiosity, doesn't it?
