Can the iPhone control Apple TV?

Rumor has it that the iPhone could do exactly that. Looprumors has found a patent application titled “Multimedia center for computing systems” for the iPhone to function as a remote control device for Apple TV filed on October 10, 2005. The patent however does not describe the device in great detail, so it could be an iPhone or even an iPod in question.
